Joline was back in London again. As always, the first thing she did was head to the skate park to see her street friends. Eastham couldn’t help but feel a pang of sadness—there were fewer and fewer of them in that small haven where she once rose as Queen and created a community for all the kids with nowhere else to go, a place where they could feel safe. Each missing skateboard meant a friend who had moved on, but...

-It’s what’s best for everyone. Especially for them- she said, and her voice echoed. Joline could name every one of them—how they had arrived, what had happened to them, their tastes, quirks, fears, and dreams. In some cases, even how they had overcome them. But time passed, and not just for her. When it all began, Joli was barely ten years old—a rebellious girl who didn’t want her mom dressing her up in frilly clothes to model. Now, many had left to start a new chapter in their lives, to grow up and turn their dreams into reality.

Joline sighed. She sat down and watched the sunlight stream through a broken window. Her reign was coming to an end—no one rules over emptiness. She didn’t know how to feel, adulthood was knocking on her door just as it was for the others, but she was afraid to leave behind those who still weren’t ready.

Two girls and a boy ran into the skate park. The boy was crying, but the girls comforted him. The tears stopped, and soon they were teaching him how to skate. They laughed.

Joline left. Maybe she’d never return. They’d all be okay in the hands of the next generation.
