While chasing the clouds away
Thea's laughter rippled through the air, bright and unrestrained. Lili lay on the grass, feeling the warmth of the sun seep into her skin, her eyes half-closed, watching her daughter wander through.
Thea stopped suddenly, her tiny head tilted back, curls catching the sunlight as if they were part of the sky itself. "Mommy," said, her voice curious, almost reverent, "Why do clouds float and not fall?" she asked, squinting up, one small hand shielding her eyes as if she could catch one.
Lili blinked, caught off guard. The question was innocent, but it hung in the air like something heavier, deeper. Clouds... Light, endlessly moving wherever the wind commanded. Was that how she'd been living? Letting life pull her without asking where or why? Or had she anchored herself somewhere long ago without realizing it?
She pushed herself up, grass sticking to her arm, and crouched to Thea's level. "Because they're light," she said softly, "and the wind loves to carry them to new places."
Thea grinned, satisfied, and spun in her little dress until she toppled backward, laughter spilling into the warm air. Lili smiled, truly smiled, but it lingered only for a breath before fading into quiet thought.
Her gaze lifted to the sky again. The clouds drifted without direction, their shapes shifting and dissolving, beautiful in their uncertainty. For a long moment, she let herself drift along with it, feeling the pull of all the directions she hadn't chosen, choices, chances and paths she'd taken. Nothing felt wrong, exactly, but nothing felt certain either.
Maybe that was okay. Maybe drifting didn't mean she was lost.
