going in blind (1/2)

“I’m not him. I’m not a…” His voice trailed off until it was barely audible. “Thief.” The word seemed to burn his tongue, and not just because he saw how it made Nia shiver, but because he knew that he was lying. As much as he wanted to believe he wasn’t that person anymore, he couldn’t deny how true it still felt. Out of all the possibilities he’d toyed with, that was the only one that had felt real the moment he considered it. And if he did, it was because some part of him didn’t condemn that behavior. It accepted it.

“What if you suddenly got your memory back? What then?”

“It doesn’t work like that, Nia.”

“No, but what if it did?” she pressed. “What do you think would happen? You think you’d just be like, ‘Oh, nah, I’ll keep eating instant noodles and living in a shoebox with three losers’? ‘Definitely no need to rob a bank, buy a penthouse, and rock a Prada robe while my butler trims my toenails’?”

“I wasn’t a bank robber,” Trent huffed.

“What do you feel when you think about money, Trent? Not the way you used to—not as a resource you fight for. But what do you feel when you think about easy money?”

Nia had dealt with her share of desperate people, had given more talks on morality than a TED speaker, and it showed in how she could ask the right question in just the right way.

“I don’t know.” Trent’s voice faltered, briefly crushed under the weight of uncertainty. Under the helplessness of realizing his current self still had secret corners he hadn’t dared to explore.

“That’s what worries me.”

“You believe in reintegration,” he argued. “You’ve told me a thousand times that everyone deserves a chance. And I’m not even an ex-con trying to start over. I don’t remember the man I used to be. I don’t remember what I did or why I did it. So why can’t you believe in my reintegration?”
