One day...
It was a few hours before midnight, and he quietly snuck out of the house for a cigarette, thinking he was unnoticed, but his sweetheart, Lior, followed him downstairs and snatched it as soon as he lit it, then leaned on railing post somewhere in the streets of Allenby, cheekily puffing smoke because she knew how much it annoyed him.
"You're 18 today and still hiding from your mom?" she chortled, passing him the cigarette.
"Of course, I think it'll break her heart to know her son is a filthy smoker." He leaned next to her so as not to block the path for pedestrians. The white city was always alive.
"I think she knows," Li smirked.
"Kapara," Daniel chuckled, "she's in denial." He wrapped his arms around her and pecked her on the cheek. Lior shrugged in his embrace and snatched the cigarette from him, tossing it away.
"She wants you to be healthy, idiot." She looked up at him, resting her head on his shoulder. "And so do I."
"
Nuu yalla, I'm enlisting in two months." He planted a tender kiss on her lips. "I'll quit later," he whispered softly. "One day... once I'm free..."
...That day never came.
