Self doubt
It's been well documented over the past few years that he has struggled with anxiety, stage fright and crippling nerves in certain situations. It's something he has dealt with his entire life. At one of his first shows, during soundcheck in front of NY punk legends, he got so worked up that both of his hands locked up and he couldn't breathe. Thankfully, those insanely intense days are behind him but the feeling is still there, quietly manifesting in the background.
He was leaning against the chipped sink in the bathroom, palms pressed to the cold porcelain and staring at himself in the mirror.
"They don't see it. You do a good job hiding it. Clown face. Fucker. But if they knew how loud it gets in here sometimes," he tapped his temple, "they'd either hug you or tell you to fuck off."
Same voice every time, that whiny little bastard.
More eyes have been watching him than he could possibly have imagined a couple of years ago, which, in itself, is always hard for him to take in. In his mind, he would always look around, constantly asking questions while playing "What do you think of my playing? Hope you like this fill." Then, just as quickly, the thought would shift to "Oh no, they didn't move, they didn't move a muscle, they're hating it!" It's never easy, especially when his wife's few feet away.
"Mo, you good?"
"Yeah, yeah," he shot back, voice cracking just slightly. "Just taking a power panic."
It was all insecure crap that had taken him absolutely years to overcome. He had never felt this much pressure on a show before and had certainly never been challenged this much, it wasn't an easy play by any means. He was still getting a few bits of grief from Zo, that encompassed with huge self doubt and it wasn't a nice place to be in. At this point he just needed a hug and feel loved.
