Erebus lay on the sofa, covered by a blanket that barely seemed to contain his sprawled body. Fever and exhaustion consumed his every fiber, each breath making his mind drift between delusions and memories of a past too distant to call his own.

His phone lay on the floor beside him, silent, without any new messages. He remembered the words that still haunted him. 'You don't deserve anything good in your life.'

He tried to focus on the present, but the memory of cold nights overwhelmed him with the tremors caused by the fever. A man that size, felled by a foolish flu. He remembered her gentle touch, her smile that lit up any darkness, the warmth of an embrace that now seemed impossible. The fever made everything seem distant, but also cruelly real.

He stared at the ceiling illuminated by the dim streetlight, that invaded the small apartment through the gaps from the poorly drawn curtains.

It was then that someone was at the door, knocking softly. He struggled to get up and opened it slowly. Erebus looked up, unable to speak, and saw Val standing in the doorway. He smiled, almost relieved, but a little confused as to whether she was really there or was just another hallucination.

Erebus closed his eyes, allowing Val to approach as she lifted a hand to touch his burning forehead. "Sorry, madam. I'm not myself today.." And he slid down, his face burying itself in the crack of her neck, seeking comfort, if only for that moment.
