She left on a Tuesday night with two suitcases full of clothes and her pockets heavy with disappointment. No talk. No confrontation. No questions asked. Erik had made sure of that—had slowly drained her, worn her down until there was nothing left in her to fight for him—for them—when he finally delivered the last blow. He’d convinced her without a word that it was pointless. That he was a lost cause. And no amount of crying, shouting, or begging could bring back the man she’d once loved.
She’d clung to his flaws with the blind devotion of an addict. But the high was gone now, and nothing remained to dull the truth that she’d married a monster. That her daughter deserved better than a broken father. And that she, ultimately, had been searching for love in all the wrong places. Because Erik didn’t love, he obsessed. And obsessions never lasted.
When he came home to find empty drawers and hollow spaces in his wardrobe, he felt only relief. Pretending was his craft—his livelihood—but there was a chasm between playing a role for gain, and living a lie inside the walls of your own home.
Still, he didn’t regret those four years. He’d thrived under her adoring gaze. He’d blossomed under her touch, with her nails in his back, her breath against his skin, and the heat of a love more enduring than anything he’d ever known. She had shaped him, no doubt about it; chiseled her name into the man he’d become.
But his story was long, and this chapter had simply come to a close.
With it, he was now free in every sense of the word.
