The words had become a mantra for Jess over the past years. She didn't need anyone - certainly not some man - to make her happy. She'd had forever once, only to learn the word meant nothing. She told herself back then there wouldn't be another. Despite that, she found herself wanting just that. That dream had been dashed before it even began. There would be no third - fourth, fifth, sixth - times a charm. Or so she thought.
But it didn't matter how many times she told herself she was happy. Saying it didn't make it so. She was drowning, and there was only one man who could save her.
The past year and a half had been an improvement. Her OnlyHams journey had made her feel alive again. She desperately wanted it to be the solution she was searching for.
She'd won the fan favorite content creator award that first year, and for a while, that ache within her was hidden away under the waves of affection that came her way. But hidden away isn't gone, and soon all the attention in the world wasn't enough to make her forget she wasn't where she wanted to be.
It was hard enough to admit to herself that she'd made a mistake, but saying it to anyone else? Gasp, unheard of. Admitting she had a weakness for him would not come easily. So she did the next best thing - an invitation extended. She wasn't sure he would take it - it had been years for him as well, after all - but he ended up on her doorstep all the same.
This Halloween would be much different than the past few. He wasn't the big bad wolf of her dreams, but in many ways he was better - and he would devour his bunny just the same.
