It’s late in Rome. Lisa finishes her last rep in the nearly empty gym. She catches her reflection in the mirror, sweaty, tired, but stronger. That’s what she tells herself. She lifts her phone, angles it right, and snaps a quick selfie before heading out for the walk to her hotel.
As she steps into the night, a wave of noise and light hits her. Rome is still wide awake. The streets buzz with voices, flags, and camera flashes, families, fans, and athletes from every corner of the world pouring in for the Popo Olympics. The city looks beautiful at night, golden lights spilling over old stone and cobbled streets. She tightens her jacket as the late night wind brushes her skin. Somewhere nearby, someone shouts, “Go Shanghai!”, her team. A small smile tugs at her lips. She’s ready to give her best. As long as she’s playing with Liz, the team feels like home.
