Lyrics of a Song

It was a rainy spring morning. Chae-Rin walked slowly along the narrow stone path of the cemetery, holding a handful of pale white lilies. Her black overcoat fluttered softly in the wind, and with every step, the ache inside her deepened. When she reached to his gravestone, her knees gave way beneath her. “I’m here,” she whispered as the first tear fell silently to the earth. She remembered the moment he laughed the most—by the sea, holding her hand as the sun dipped below the horizon. No sunset would ever be the same again.

Chae-Rin hadn’t written a song in over a year. The music had stopped the day he did. But today, as she sat by the grave, she took a folded piece of paper from her pocket—the lyrics of a song she could never bring herself to release. Her voice trembled as she sang under her breath:

“If I could steal one more breath from time,
I’d use it just to say your name.
But silence is all I hear now,
Since the day you slipped away.”

The wind picked up almost as if responding. For a fleeting second, she imagined she heard him in the breeze, humming along. She closed her eyes. The pain hadn't gone, but the song, even unfinished, reminded her of who she used to be—and maybe, someday, could be again. Some losses aren’t measured in silence, but in the songs we’re too broken to finish.
