Chasing a Ghost - Prologue IV, Part I
Smoke curled from the cigarette between her fingers as she stood by the Seine, watching the city flow past like smoke in the wind.
Rain-soaked streets shimmered under passing headlights. A couple hurried past, laughing under a shared umbrella. A violinist disappeared into the metro.
The world pushed on. For once, she didn’t follow.
And then—
A figure. Distant. Fading.
Familiar in the way ghosts were.
Uncle Matteo?
Her breath caught.
She ran.
Fast. Faster.
Through the crowd.
Dodging shoulders, sidestepping tables, weaving through the moving city.
He was ahead. A dark coat. A familiar tilt of the shoulders.
Too far. But close enough.
UNCLE MATTEO.
He turned a corner.
She lunged after him.
An alley—narrow, slick with rain.
There—just ahead.
She reached out.
Almost.
A passing car.
Headlights flashed.
A second stolen.
Gone.
Just like that.
The city swallowed him whole.
The chase was over. But the questions remained.
She walked back to the hotel, heart still racing, mind still running.
The line clicked.
A question asked.
"Where’s Uncle Matteo?"
A pause. Too long.
Then, her mother’s voice.
"Rehab. Again."
A wrong answer given.
